Club Feroviar and Moldovan Railways launch the Moldovan Railway Summit
On 7-8 June, 2012, Club Feroviar and Moldovan Railways organise in Chisinau the “Moldovan Railway Summit” bringing forth discussions on the role of the Moldovan railway system in the Eurasian platform, the importance of EU’s partnership on the TEN-T link and the strategy for the development and modernisation of the national railway infrastructure.
The summit will be attended by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure in the Republic of Moldova, Anatol Şalaru, Dirk Schuebel, Head of EU Delegation to Moldova, Andrei Cuculescu, TRACECA National Secretary in Moldova, Libor Lochman, Executive Director – Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER), Vitalie Strună, General Manager – Moldovan Railways, Zinoviy S. Broyde, Director – Centre “EcoResource”, Ukraine, Vigo Legzdins, Adviser to the Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure, Rosario De Blasio, Operational Quality Control Coordinator – European Union Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM), Abdoulaye Seck, Country Manager – World Bank, Tomas Tamosauskas, Loan Officer Eastern Europe, Southern Caucasus and Russia – European Investment Bank.
The event will also include a technical visit on the railway section Chişinău-Ungheni. During the Railway Summit, the main actors involved in the establishment and implementation of railway policy development in Moldova, with the support of European partners, will analyse the topic of infrastructure network modernisation at the border with the European Union and the modernisation of the rolling stock fleet for reducing energy consumption and pollution. Major railway projects, such as Chişinău-Ungheni, Chişinău-Giurguleşti, building a modern logistics terminal, modernisation projects aimed at encouraging freight and passenger traffic on Russia-Kazakhstan-Ukraine-Moldova-European Union network, these are few of the topics to be approached in the debates.
In the transport area, the Government of the Republic of Moldova, with financial support from the World Bank, launched a project for the elaboration of the Transport and Logistics Strategy. As regards railway development, the government focused on priority projects listed in the “Activity Programme of the Moldovan Government” – “European Integration: Freedom, Democracy, Welfare” 2009-2013: rehabilitation and electrification of railways and their connection to the European gauge, the priority being Chişinău-Ungheni section and the liberalisation and development of competition in the railway transport services market.
