Moldovan Railways presents new upgraded multiple-unit

01/06/2012

Moldovan Railways and Club Feroviar have summoned the Moldovan Railway Summit (on the 7-8 of June in Chisinau) which will gather the representatives of the railway companies in the CIS and neighbouring countries and participants from the European Union and international financing institutions.
The summit agenda will include discussions on the importance of upgrading the railway infrastructure and the implementation of projects for optimising railway traffic. Moreover, the participants will identify solutions for improving the operation activities. In the context of modernising the line Chisinau-Ungheni, the Moldovan Railways will present the new upgraded multiple-unit. The vehicle is equipped with modern facilities providing a comfortable and silent transport for passengers and is energy-efficient. The reconstruction of the vehicle facilitates access, its interior being designed to meet the passengers’ demand. “This is a new pilot project and we are glad to be launching it this year. There are four countries involved in this project to be responsible for motorization, design and assembly of the rail cars. Moldovan Railways will be also involved in the design, assembly, the electronics, meeting traffic safety conditions and technical requirements”, declared Vitalie Struna, the General Manager of Moldovan Railways. The company has 15 diesel units, with four wagons each and they will be modernised so as to be capable to provide efficient transport to the CSI countries.
As for infrastructure projects, “one of the projects that we plan to develop is the connection of Chisinau  to the city of Iasi through a standard gauge infrastructure of 1435 mm. Transshipment and transfusion alternatives are much more varied in Chisinau than in Ungheni, from the point of view of the existing area. Thus, having a European gauge railway up to Chisinau, we can form a hub to transfer the freight to the CIS country”, pointed out Struna. Major railway projects such as Chisinau-Ungheni, Chisinau-Giurguleşti, the construction of a modern logistics terminal, modernisation projects to encourage freight and passenger transport on the route Russia-Kazakhstan-Ukraine-Moldova-European Union, these are some of the projects that Moldovan Railways plan to develop and their implementation will generate new discussion during the event.
The summit will be attended by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure in the Republic of Moldova, Anatol Şalaru, Dirk Schuebel, Head of EU Delegation to Moldova, Andrei Cuculescu, TRACECA National Secretary in Moldova,  Libor Lochman, Executive  Director – Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER), Vitalie Strună, General Manager – Moldovan Railways, Zinoviy S.
